EGI Solutions: Lifecycle Management
Project Overview: The customer was looking for a solution that would allow them to manage a multi platform infrastructure. They needed an automation of patching services, provisioning, and inventory management, preferably from a single console.
Problem: The customer has 500 + sun servers as well as HP and Dell servers running Solaris, Windows and Linux. They were struggling with applying patches and keeping all builds standardized. They were also challenged with getting a complete inventory.
Challenge: The customer has many locations and it is a large logistical challenge to fly people internationally in order for them to patch servers. There are also very large costs associated with this process. The customer also needed to meet compliance and regulatory mandates enacted by the board of directors.
Solution: The Ergonomic Group presented the Sun Connection (Aduva) solution.
Services & Support: The Ergonomic Group implemented the Sun connection solution on a Satellite server as well as over 450+ agents for their servers to be managed.
Result: The result was a large cost savings in management resources. The customer now has the ability to manage their world wide servers from one single location. Currently, there is no longer a need to fly a team around the world in order to perform patch management or system inventories.
Follow Up: EGI is working with the customer to deploy to the remainder of their infrastructure. We are currently discussing the provisioning portion of the solution as well as conversing about implementing an enterprise consolidation to Blade technology.
Customer Feedback: Patching was made easy in a smart dependable way. A central repository of information about systems including hardware, package information, configuration files (with versioning), and current patches was created. Sun connect handles patch and package cross-dependency very well with lots of information for reports. The tool has CL interface and access levels for system management. We have had a good experience with them.
